The Symbian platform is an open source operating system for mobile devices. It was created by merging and integrating software assets contributed by Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, and Sony Ericsson, including Symbian OS, the S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) user interfaces.

History

Symbian is the successor to Symbian OS, following the official launch of the Symbian Foundation in April 2009.[citation needed]

Devices

Symbian^1 forms the basis for the platform. It incorporates Symbian OS and S60 5th Edition (S60 5.0), which is built on Symbian OS v9.4.[1]

The first open version of Symbian will be Symbian^2[2], however as of November 1, 2009 there are no devices with this version announced.[3]

Applications

Symbian Horizon is an application-publishing program and directory of applications for Symbian mobile devices that was launched on October 27th, 2009[5][6].
