The Symbian Foundation is a non-profit organisation, founded by Nokia, Sony Ericsson, NTT DoCoMo, Texas Instruments, Vodafone, Samsung, ST Ericsson and AT&T.[1] [2]
The Symbian Foundation was formed to steward the Symbian platform, which is based on Symbian OS, an operating system for mobile phones that had previously been owned and licensed by Symbian Ltd..
The aim of the Symbian Foundation is to publish the Symbian platform royalty-free under the open source Eclipse Public License. Full EPL publication is slated for mid-2010[3]. In the meantime, to gain access to the source, organisations must become members of the foundation. Membership is open to any organisation.
Unlike Symbian OS, which required an additional user interface system, either S60, UIQ or MOAP(s), to form a complete operating system, Symbian includes, or will include, a user interface component that has no additional licensing requirement. Symbian releases are styled Symbian^1, Symbian^2 etc. (vocalised as "Symbian one", "Symbian two").
Symbian software development follows the open source model. The role of the foundation is not to develop, but to evangelise, co-ordinate and ensure compatibility.
The foundation also provides key services to its members and the community such as collecting, building and distributing Symbian source. It also provides
- Software development kits and tools
- Documentation and example code
- Discussion forums and mailing lists
- Application signing program (Symbian Signed) [4]
- Application distribution (Symbian Horizon)[5]
- Idea gathering and feedback (Symbian Ideas)[6]
