History

Free Library of Philadelphia - Tacony Branch

Toaconing or Toaconick, was a small township situated in the bend between the Delaware River, Wissinoming Creek on the northeast and Frankford Creek and Little Tacony Creek on the south and west. It lay east of the town of Frankford, and at an early date was incorporated in Oxford Township. The neighborhood's early history was heavily shaped by its founder, English industrialist Henry Disston. Disston's saw mill was the major employer in the neighborhood. The Tacony Library opened November 27, 1906. The land was a gift of the Disston Family, and the building was a gift of Andrew Carnegie.

The area has seen economic decline and population loss in recent decades.[citation needed]
