A city of central Honshu, Japan, northwest of Tokyo. A silk-manufacturing center, the city is best known for its statue of Kannon, goddess of mercy. Population: 341,000.

 

 
 
(täkäsä') , city (1990 pop. 236,461), Gumma prefecture, central Honshu, Japan. A transportation and industrial center, it produces computers and computer components and has textile factories, machine and metal plants, food-processing plants, and breweries. It is known chiefly for its statue (130 ft/40 m high) of Kannon, goddess of mercy.
