An ancient city of Egypt in the eastern delta of the Nile River. Important during the XIX and XXI Dynasties, it was abandoned after the sixth century A.D.

Substantial temple and cemetery area in the Nile Delta, excavated by Flinders Petrie in 1883–6 and Pierre Montet in 1929–51. Amongst the most significant discoveries were the rich and well-preserved royal tombs of the 21st and 22nd Dynasties (1070–715 bc) constructed in the precincts of the great temple dedicated to Amen.
