Review

What do you do when the driving creative force behind your band turns out to be a raging egomaniac? Worse, that raging egomaniac thinks he's some sort of new rock god, channeling Jim Morrison in all his blustery, pretentious, Lizard King glory? Well, if you're Days of the New, you get a new singer and regroup after you're dismissed by your former boss and pretty much play the same sluggish snooze-rock as your old band. Hence, Tantric. ~ Michael Gallucci, All Music Guide

Tantric is the debut album of the post-grunge band of the same name. It was released February 13, 2001 and debuted at #193 on the Billboard 200. The album would eventually peak at #71 and reached platinum status due to the hit-single "Breakdown," as well as follow up singles "Astounded" and "Mourning."

After the band signed to Maverick Records in 1999, they recorded their self-titled album with producer Toby Wright in 2000. Music videos were produced for all three singles and fared well on MTV2. "Breakdown" and "Astounded" feature a more abrasive, confrontational rock sound while "Mourning" takes on power ballad feel. The album as a whole emphasizes acoustic guitar and harmonized vocal melody which is, to some degree, reminiscent of Days of the New, the band from which the three founding Tantric members came. This style was also heavily influenced by Wright, who is known for applying multi-track vocals to much of his work. The band toured extensively with artists such as Kid Rock and Creed to promote the album.
