Taoyuan City

Wikipedia: Taoyuan City

Taoyuan City (traditional Chinese: 桃園市pinyin: Táoyuán Shì; Wade-Giles: T'ao-yüan) is the county seat of Taoyuan County in Taiwan, located in the northwestern part of the island.

History

Taoyuan is the native home to the Plains tribes of Aborigines. Taoyuan's old name was "peach orchard" (桃仔園; POJ: Thô-á-hn̂g), since the area used to have many peach blossoms. In 1920 under Japanese rule, the area was renamed "peach garden street" (桃園街), and incorporated into the Hsinchu state as a county jurisdiction. After the Chinese Civil War, it was "Taoyuan County, Taoyuan Town". Since 1971, the name has remained Taoyuan City (桃園市).

Taoyuan's sister cities are Irvine, California and Kennewick, Washington.
