Tara June Winch (born 2 December 1983) is an indigenous Australian writer. Her first book, Swallow the Air, won several major Australian literary awards.

Life
Winch was born in Wollongong, New South Wales, of Wiradjuri, Afghan and English heritage. She is studying for a Masters at the University of Wollongong. She travels and works throughout the world.[1] She has one daughter and is the girlfriend of The Cat Empire's Felix Riebl.
Writing
Her first novel, Swallow the air, won several awards. The judges for the Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Novelists award wrote that the book "is distinguished by its natural grace and vivid language" and that "As with many first books it deals with issues of family, growing up and stepping into the world. But it strives to connect these experiences to broader social issues, though never in a didactic fashion".[2] Thuy On writes that "Swallow the Air can either be read as a novel with short chapters or as a series of inter-linked short stories" and describes Winch's style in the following words: "in between prose of unvarnished vernacular, Winch offers lyrical sentences that delight in startling metaphorical allusions". [3]
Winch has also had been published in Best Australian Stories 2005, the Griffith Review, The Bulletin, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
