Taranaki

A regional council whose name is the Maori name for the volcanic Mt Egmont. It means 'Barren Mountain' from tara 'peak', a 'of', and ngaki 'clear of vegetation'. Egmont is an active volcano and therefore has no vegetation on its upper slopes. It gives its name to the Taranaki Gate, a temporary gate made of wire strands tied with a wire loop to vertical posts.
