1. A grandson of Japheth, the third son of Noah. In I Chronicles 1:7, he is called Tarshishah.
2. Country from which beaten silver (Jer 10:9), silver, iron, tin and lead were brought by the people of Tyre (Ezek 27:12). Tarshish is associated with an island (Is 23:6; 66:19) and Jonah went there by ship (Jonah 1:3). Solomon also sent ships there (II Chr 9:21). The identification is not at all clear. Some scholars put forward Tartasus in southern Spain, to which, according to the classical authorities, the Phoenicians sailed with their ships to obtain silver, iron and tin. Josephus' identification with Tarsus in Cilicia (Antiq. I, 127; IX, 208) is accepted by many scholars today.
