Tekken 2

Games: Tekken 2

Game Description

Following the exceptional success of the original Tekken, the sequel raises the bar on what was expected of what ultimately ended up a gaming franchise. Enhancements were made from perhaps every aspect of the game. Characters are more varied and numerous, the moves possible with each of these characters is multiplied many fold, and the environments which they interact are certainly more detailed. Gameplay however remains familiar. Action is on three dimensions, and the characters are fully rendered in 3D. Matches are set as best of three, and a win is scored when the opponents health bar is decreased to zero. Multiples of damage are scored for combination hits and complex moves which are sequences of button combinations.

Review: Overall

Who doesn´t know the quality of Tekken? One of the first true three dimensional fighting-games for the arcade continued to outmatch most all of it's competitors long after it's initial release. Expectations were high with the sequel, and once it arrived, many people had questions as to whether it would be a significant technology leap. Is it better than the first game? Yes, in almost every aspect. Does it look better? Yes, the backgrounds could be considered remarkable for the time period and the fighters gained a significant amount of detail. Does it sound better? Yes, the sound effects and the music are spectacular.

The graphics in Tekken2 are one of the game's strong points. The intro is astonishing and when you win the game with any fighter (bosses too) there is a lovely rendered FMV-ending showing the fighter in his dojo, house, park etc. The backgrounds are all new and they look fantastic. There is for example the New York-background with the skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty. And there is the lovely forest-background with its great music. There are different backgrounds and music for each fighter.

The gameplay has been significantly enhanced with the addition of many more characters, which consequently adds a lot of replay value. It's almost intimidating as to the large amount of combos and special moves that are hidden within the game.

Overall, Tekken 2 could be considered a worthy sequel to the original. Certainly worth a few quarters.
