TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. is a Maryland corporation, which was founded in 1987. The Company develops and applies wireless data communications technology, with emphasis on text messaging, location-based services including enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) for wireless carriers and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service providers, and secure satellite-based communication solutions for government customers. Its business is conducted through two operating segments, Commercial and Government. The Company’s Commercial Segment products and services enable wireless carriers to deliver short text messages, location information, internet content, and other enhanced communication services to and from wireless phones. Its Commercial Segment also provides E9-1-1 services, commercial location-based services, inter-carrier text message distribution services, and carrier technology on a hosted, or service bureau, basis. It also earns subscriber revenue through wireless applications including its Rand McNally(r) Traffic application. The Company’s Government Segment designs, assembles, sells and maintains data network communication systems, including its SwiftLink(r) deployable communication systems. It also owns and operates secure satellite teleport facilities, resell access to satellite airtime (known as space segment), and provides communication systems integration, information technology services, and software systems and services to the U.S. Department of Defense and other government customers. The Company currently has more than 65 patents, mainly for wireless messaging and location technology, and more than 210 patent applications pending. SwiftLink(r), Xypoint(r), and Enabling Convergent Technologies(r), are trademarks or service marks of the Company or its subsidiaries. Total System Services, Inc. (NYSETSS) (commonly referred to as TSYS) is the second largest processor of merchant acquirers and bank credit card issuers. Creators of TS2 and TS1. TSYS is located in Columbus, GA. TSYS acquired a leading prepaid card processor, Clarity Payment Solutions, Inc. in 2004 and rebranded it TSYS Prepaid.

History

In 1959 TSYS started as a division of Columbus Bank and Trust (CB&T). In 1974, CB&T started processing credit cards for other banks. In 1983, TSYS became a separate publicly traded company, although majority ownership remained with CB&T and its successor, Synovus. In 1991, TSYS began development on the next generation of processing platforms. Then in 1994, TSYS launched TS2. [1] On October 25, 2007, TSYS and Synovus (holding 81% of shares at the time) announced a spin-off that was completed as of the end of 2007.[2]
