TeleCommunication Systems, Inc is a Maryland corporation founded in 1987. The Company develops and applies highly reliable wireless data communications technology, with emphasis on location- based services such as enhanced 9-1-1 for wireless carriers and Voice over Internet Protocol service providers. The Company's business is conducted through two operating segments, Commercial Applications and Government. Commercial Applications Segment: The carrier software system products enable wireless carriers to deliver short text messages, location information, internet content, and other enhanced communication services to and from wireless phones. It provides E9-1-1 services, commercial location-based services, and inter-carrier text message distribution services on a hosted, or service bureau basis, that is, customers use its software functionality through connections to and from the network operations centers, paying the monthly based on the number of subscribers, cell sites, or call center circuits, or message volume. As of December 31, 2005, TCS provides hosted services under contracts with 36 wireless carrier networks, as well as VoIP service providers. The Company also earns subscriber revenue through wireless applications including its Rand McNallytm Traffic application, which is available via all major U.S. wireless carriers. As of December 31, 2005, TCS had deployed 85 software systems for its customers in wireless carrier networks around the world, including those of Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Telefonica and its affiliate Vivo, Alltel, and Hutchison Whampoa's '3' brand third generation networks. Commercial Applications Segment consists of Commercial Product and Service Offerings and Commercial Market Opportunities and Strategy. The commercial customers include wireless telecommunications carriers in the United States and foreign countries. Government Segment: Since founding in 1987, it has provided communication systems integration, information technology services, and software solutions to the U.S. Department of Defense and other government customers. TCS also owns and operates secure satellite teleport facilities, and resell access to satellite airtime. The Company designs, furnishs, installs and operates wireless and data network communication systems, including its SwiftLink(r) deployable communication systems, which incorporate high speed, satellite, and internet protocol technology. More than 600 of its SwiftLink(r) deployable communication systems are in use for security, defense, and law enforcement around the world. Government Segment consists of Government Products & Services and Government Market Opportunities and Strategy. The major Government segment customers include units of the U.S. Departments of Defense, Justice, and State, the General Services Administration, the City of Baltimore, and Northrop Grumman. The Enterprise division, which was formerly part of Commercial Applications segment, generates subscriber revenue as a reseller of Research in Motion's BlackBerry(r) devices and service, and as a provider of wireless client device software applications, including real-time wireless delivery of financial market data. TCS sells its products and services through direct sales force and through indirect channels. The direct sales force consists of approximately 40 professionals in the U.S. and Europe. Swiftlink(r), Xypoint(r), Enabling Convergent Technologies(r) Wireless Internet Gatewaytm, 20/20 Deliverytm, Fusiontm, and mobeotm are trademarks or service marks of TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. or its subsidiaries. Total System Services, Inc. (NYSETSS) (TSYS) is the largest processor of merchant acquirers and bank credit card issuers. Creators of TS2 and TS1. Synovus owns a majority of TSYS common stock. TSYS is located in Columbus, GA. TSYS acquired a leading prepaid card processor, Clarity Payment Solutions, Inc. in 2004 and rebranded it TSYS Prepaid.

History

In 1959 TSYS started as a division of Columbus Bank and Trust (CB&T). In 1974, CB&T started processing credit cards for other banks. In 1983, TSYS became a separate publicly traded company. In 1991, TSYS began development on the next generation of processing platforms. Then in 1994, TSYS launched TS2.
