Telephone jack

Wikipedia: Telephone jack

Telephone jacks are sockets that receive telephone plugs. A telephone jack is usually wired to a telephone line in a building, which usually corresponds to a single telephone number.

Older telephones typically have a telephone plug on the end of a cord which can plug into a telephone jack. New telephones may instead have a telephone jack of their own instead of a cord, in which case a cord with plugs on both ends (male/male) is used to connect the telephone to the telephone line. Fax machines, answering machines, and other devices connect in a similar manner.
