Review

The second Giorgio Moroder collaboration of Sparks' career doesn't have quite the emphasis on Moroder trademarks compared to its predecessor; he has only two songwriting credits here, while the Mael brothers take most of them alone. Still, the breakout single "When I'm with You" and "Just Because You Love Me" have an ineffable disco stomp and the requisite cymbal slaps on the offbeat, while "Noisy Boys" and "Stereo" have an experimental, laddish feel that looks past disco into '80s synth-pop and new romantic. Though disco fans can feel safe with No. 1 in Heaven, those more interested in new wave would be well served to pick up Terminal Jive first. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Terminal Jive is the ninth album by Sparks, and the second in co-operation with Giorgio Moroder. The album has a disco-vibe like its predecessor but featured less synthesizers, opting instead for more electric guitar. The album was produced by Giorgio Moroder and Harold Faltermeyer, the latter of which is claimed to have produced the majority of the album.

The album was entirely shunned in the Anglo-Saxon world. However, Sparks scored a massive hit single in France with "When I'm With You", which led to them staying in the country for a year promoting the album.[1][2]

Release

Terminal Jive was not a success in the UK and wasn't even released in the US. It fared better in continental Europe.

The lead single "When I'm with You" became a massive hit in France where it spent six weeks at #1. The single also hit the Top 20 in Australia, reaching #14. The second single from the album was "Young Girls", it too performed well in France. "Young Girls" was released with an extended remix on 12", an edited version on the 7" single, and backed with "Just Because You Love Me". French releases included "Rock 'n' Roll People in a Disco World", since "Just Because You Love Me" had accompanied the release of "When I'm with You" it that territory already.
