Biography

Country-pop singer/songwriter/keyboardist Terri Gibbs enjoyed some success in the early '80s before returning to the gospel music she grew up with. Gibbs was born in Miami in 1954 and raised from age one in Augusta, GA; blind from birth, she turned to music at an early age, first playing the piano at only three years old. In addition to gospel music, she listened to early rock & roll, pop, and soul (particularly Ray Charles), and loved the Grand Ole Opry radio show. She sang in choirs and talent contests while growing up, and met Chet Atkins backstage at one show. At his request, she sent him a demo tape, and at 18 followed his advice to try her luck in Nashville. She didn't have much luck attracting record companies, and instead moved to Miami, where she played keyboards in a band called Sound Dimension. In 1973, she quit the band to attend college, but dropped out after a year to focus on songwriting. She returned to Augusta, formed her own band in 1975, and played locally for the next several years. Her demo tape found its way into the hands of producer/songwriter Ed Penney, who signed her to MCA in 1980.

The title cut of Gibbs' Top Ten debut album, Somebody's Knockin', was a major crossover hit in 1981; not only did it reach the country Top Ten, it also just missed similar territory on the pop side, and climbed into the Top Five on the adult contemporary charts. The follow-up, "Rich Man," was a Top 20 country hit, and Gibbs was named the ACM's Best New Female Vocalist, also winning the CMA's inaugural Horizon Award (for artists rising to new levels of prominence). However, while Gibbs charted with two more albums (1981's I'm a Lady and 1983's Over Easy), neither matched the success of her debut. Likewise, she managed two more Top 20 country hits in 1982's "Ashes to Ashes" and 1983's "Anybody Else's Heart but Mine," but nothing on the level of "Somebody's Knockin'." Still, she embarked on a high-profile tour with George Jones over 1981-1982, often duetting on-stage with him. Gibbs spent several years off-record, then switched to the kind of country gospel music she'd started out singing. She returned in 1987 with the Grammy-nominated Turn Around; "Unconditional Love," "Comfort the People," and "Promised Land" were all successful on the CCM charts. After 1990's Great Day, on the small Morning Gate label, Gibbs left music to concentrate on her family. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Biography

Teresa Fay Gibbs was born June 15, 1954 in Miami, Florida but raised in suburb around Augusta,Georgia called Grovetown, Georgia.[1] Born blind, she learned to play piano at age three.[1] As a child, she sang in the church choir and at talent contests, and at age seventeen, she opened for Bill Anderson.[2] Eventually, she met Chet Atkins, who advised her to move to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a country music career, which she did at age eighteen.[1] After failing to find a record deal, she returned to Miami and joined a band called Sound Dimension.[1] She continued to perform locally, later forming a band called the Terri Gibbs Trio, which performed at a Steak & Ale in Augusta, Georgia.[2] Gibbs then sent a demo tape to record producer Ed Penney of MCA Records, signing to the label in 1980.[1]

Musical career

Gibbs' first single release was "Somebody's Knockin'", also the title of her debut album. This song was a crossover hit upon its 1981 release, reaching #8 on the U.S. country charts, #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the Adult Contemporary charts.[3] It was followed by "Rich Man", a #19 country hit which also entered the pop charts.[3] Her debut album won her the Academy of Country Music's Top Female Vocalist award.[1] She was also the first winner of the Country Music Association's Horizon Award (which is awarded to emerging artists),[4] and was nominated for a Grammy Award.[2] Gibbs performed on the Grand Ole Opry as well.[2]

MCA released her second album, I'm a Lady, later in 1981. This album was less successful,[1] although it produced a #12 hit in "Mis'ry River",[3] its second and final single. 1982's Some Days It Rains All Night Long produced a Top 20 hit in "Ashes to Ashes" and a #45 in its title track.[5] Also in 1981 and 1982, Gibbs toured with George Jones and sang duets with him onstage.[1] Her final MCA album, Over Easy, also produced a minor hit in "Anybody Else's Heart but Mine", and after releasing a compilation called The Best of Terri Gibbs, she left the label.[6]

Gibbs switched to Warner Bros. Records for her fifth album, 1985's Old Friends.[7] All three of this album's singles — "A Few Good Men", "Rockin' in a Brand New Cradle" and "Someone Must Be Missing You Tonight" — missed the country Top 40.[5]

Gibbs later shifted her focus to Contemporary Christian music, recording Turn Around and Comfort the People in 1987 and 1988, respectively, on Canaan Records.[6] The former gave Gibbs her second Grammy nomination.[6] What a Great Day, her third Christian album, followed in 1990 on the Morning Gate label.[6] Gibbs then retired from the music industry.[1]

Personal life

Gibbs married Grovetown, Georgia city councilman David Daughtry on April 28, 1988, and remained married to him until his death in February 2008.[6][8] They had one son, David Wayne Daughtry II, born October 20, 1989.[8]
