test

A means of determining whether a hypothesis can be accepted. Typical hypotheses include 'the distribution is normal', 'the mean is 5', or 'the sample was unbiased'. The question is whether a hypothesis is acceptable, or should be rejected in favour of some alternative hypothesis. Data are then examined and a judgement is made. See hypothesis test.
