Plot
Thirty years after The Last Picture Show, 1984, Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges), now in his forties, is the wealthy tycoon of a suffering oil company. His relationship with his family isn't prospering, either. He's got a wife, Karla (Annie Potts), who believes the mild-mannered Duane is cheating on her; a son, Dickie (William McNamara), who seems to be following in his father's libidinous footsteps; and misbehaving grandchildren.
In addition to his dysfunctional family, many of Anarene's other citizens have never moved beyond its boundaries. That includes Ruth Popper (Cloris Leachman), now working as Duane's secretary, and a despondent Lester Marlow (Randy Quaid), now a businessman who seems a prime candidate for a business crisis or a heart attack or both.
As for Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms), Duane's best friend of long ago, his increasingly erratic behavior has caused Duane concern over Sonny's mental health.
One native of Anarene who did move far away, Jacy Farrow, re-enters the picture. She has traveled the world and experienced its pleasures, but recently has experienced a painful tragedy that has brought her back to her hometown and once again into Duane's life.
