Thaumarchaeota
Scientific classification
Domain: Archaea
Kingdom: incertae sedis
(or Crenarchaeota)

Phylum: Thaumarchaeota
Order

In taxonomy, the Thaumarchaeota are a newly-proposed phylum of the Archaea. It contains two orders: the Nitrosopumilales and the Cenarchaeales.[1] These organisms are mesophilic and may play important roles in biogeochemical cycles, such as the nitrogen cycle.

The phylum was proposed based on phylogenetic data, such as the sequences of these organisms' ribosomal RNA genes, and the presence of a form of type I topoisomerase that was previously thought to be unique to the eukaryotes.[1][2]
