Who's Who in Opera: the All-Wise Mussel

Mussel, the All-Wise (Strauss: Die ägyptische Helena). Mezzo-Soprano. An omniscient Seashell who can advise the enchantress Aithra of events taking place anywhere in the world. The Mussel tells of Menelaus' intention to kill Helena on board their ship, thus allowing Aithra to save her by causing the ship to be wrecked in a storm. Created (1928) by Helene Jung.
