The Ancient Art of Oriental Bellydance, Volume 1 is recommended for absolute beginners of the art form. Teacher Alexandra King appears in costume to demonstrate a dance at the opening. Her eight-minute recital is a prelude to the later lesson. Though the production value is limited, King includes very clear instructions. After breaking down the steps, she picks up the pace and concludes with a few fancier moves. King's onscreen persona is somewhat removed and the busy background can be distracting. Also, she never delves into the more complicated theories behind belly-dancing or the accompanying finger rhythms. First-timers might find this approach preferable. Volume one of this 1987 set is a very gentle introduction to the ancient art. ~ Sarah Ing, All Movie Guide
