The Best of Everything (1958) is the first novel by Rona Jaffe. It is the story of five young employees of a New York publishing company. In 1959, the novel became a movie released by Twentieth Century Fox with Diane Baker, Hope Lange, Stephen Boyd, Suzy Parker, Robert Evans, Brian Aherne and Joan Crawford as Amanda Farrow, a hard-driving book editor. Longtime Fox music director Alfred Newman wrote the final musical score of his contract with the studio for this film.
The novel was made into a soap opera written by James Lipton. The show aired on ABC from March 30 to September 25, 1970.
The novel was referenced in the season 1 episode 6 of Mad Men, where it was described by Don Draper (Jon Hamm) as being dirtier than the film version.
