Homelessness "is" the big issue to The Big Issue Company, a commercial alternative to charity. "The Big Issue" weekly news and culture magazine is sold on the street by homeless people who are trained to become authorized vendors of the title. (The magazine is so well-known that TV show "EastEnders" has even had a "Big Issue" vendor character.) Editions are published throughout the UK and in several other countries. The company supports The Big Issue Foundation, which offers homeless people such services as financial advice and support, health and housing assistance, and job training. Editor-in-Chief A. John Bird and Body Shop director Gordon Roddick launched "The Big Issue" in 1991.
