Biography

Taking inspiration from early-'60s Brit rock and the D.I.Y. spirit of punk, the Blakes are comprised of Garnet Keim (vocals, guitar), Snow Keim, and Bob Husak (drummer). The power trio took root in 2001, when the Maine-born Keim siblings (who had been busking across the country since the late '90s, working odd jobs and writing music) met Husak at a Seattle coffeehouse. The Keims were impressed with Husak's percussion, likening its energy to that of the Who's Keith Moon, and the three relocated to Los Angeles to write material for their newly minted band. After two years, the Blakes left the coast on a self-booked tour, playing unpaid shows and holding impromptu practices at truck stops. Upon returning home to Seattle, they issued the self-released Little Whispers EP in 2005, effectively gaining the attention of local radio station KEXP. The station's influential DJs -- most notably programming director John Richards -- proved to be early champions of the Blakes, giving them extensive airplay and broadcasting an in-studio performance as well. The Blakes responded by issuing a second EP the following year -- this one self-titled and self-released -- and were subsequently signed by local label Light in the Attic. 2007 saw the release of the Streets EP; later that year, the Blakes reissued their self-titled EP as an official full-length album, complete with remastered sound and additional tracks. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide

Overview

Prior to the band's conception, brothers Garnet and Snow Keim had busked around the country writing music in the late '90s, ultimately leading them to Seattle, WA. The band formed in 2001 when the Keim brothers were served coffee by their future drummer, Bob Husak, in a local Seattle coffeehouse (Tully's).[1] Named after a dream that bassist Snow Keim experienced involving an encounter with 18th century English poet William Blake in a metal shop, The Blakes moved to Los Angeles and began their musical career, playing shows and living for nearly two years in a Days Inn motel.[2] The band put out a string of self-released EPs and eventually moved back to Seattle.[1] In 2005, The Blakes gained major exposure from their fourth release, Little Whispers, when Seattle radio station KEXP began playing and promoting their music. In 2006, the band released their self-titled LP and toured extensively, a tour which included a show at the Gadfly in La Grande, OR, opening for local sensation, Rudolf Rocker. In the following year, the band signed to Seattle independent record label Light In the Attic. In 2007 on their new label, the band released the Streets EP, and later remastered and reissued The Blakes LP.[1] In 2009, The Blakes had two more independent releases: Lights On EP and Souvenir LP.
