Biography

Signed to celebrity DJ Steve Aoki's Dim Mak label and often compared stylistically to French electro superstars Justice, the Bloody Beetroots generated significant buzz in the music blogosphere with their productions and remixes. The Italian duo's masked appearance à la Daft Punk also garnered media attention. The Bloody Beetroots began establishing themselves as a performance act in early 2008 with a short American tour that included a stop at South by Southwest as well as numerous club gigs in Los Angeles, where they appeared alongside Aoki. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

The Bloody Beetroots are an Italian electronica and dance music duo. Formed in late 2006 by producer Bobby Rifo, an international indie producer, and DJ Tommy Tea.[1] Their 2008 EP Cornelius was in the Top 100 International iTunes downloads for that year.[2] This album was a complete art project composed of music, videos, and fashion. A collaboration with french label Sixpack France was done to release a limited-edition tee shirt. The duo wear Venom masks while performing.[3] The duo had a short tour of the United States in early 2008, alongside DJ Steve Aoki.[3] In 2008, their song "Butter" was included on the soundtrack for FIFA 09[4] and "Mac Mac" was featured in 2K Sports' NBA 2K9.

History

Early years

Bob Rifo studied classical guitar and solfège at a young age growing up in Italy. Influenced by composers such as Frédéric Chopin and Beethoven, Rifo used this as inspiration to infuse the elements of classical and punk music. As time wore on, Rifo steered away from his roots, becoming more and more influenced by chaos: the raw energy of punk and rockabilly, the wild images of comic artists such as Magnus and Benito Jacovitti and, above all, Tanino Liberatore. Liberatore was the inventor of Rank Xerox. Rifo had had it with Chopin, Beethoven and Debussy. He shifted his eyes and ears to producing a noise that reflected the chaos and anarchy he lived and died by. A decade of no-holds-barred experimentation ensued. Debuting on the music scene in 1998, Rifo produced hip-hop, film soundtracks, house, drum and bass, including producing an album for Italian hip-hop artist Da Fam. In 1998, Rifo created experimental electronica with a project called Cafeaudio and produced electronica and house with international music labels. A decade of no-holds-barred experimentation ensued. [5][6]

In 2005, Bob Rifo’s Gang was formed playing a fusion of punk and rock. Rifo wanted to promote the band's show as a 'band + dj set' and thus created the "The Bloody Beetroots Dj Set" as a support act for the band, with the band's manager Tommy Tea assisting the set. However, Rifo decided to disband Bob Rifo’s Gang due to collective alcoholism in the band.[5]

As Rifo was producing electronica before the band's disbandment, he returned to his roots three months later using the name The Bloody Beetroots with his challenge setforth as "to bring punk rock aesthetics into clubland and the electronic medium."[5]

In early December 2009, Bloody Beetroots played around Australia as part of the Stereosonic DJ festival.
