Review

Unlike many other box sets currently available, this four-CD package is actually a sampler taken from Joe Henderson's many recordings for Blue Note; all but three selections date from 1963-69. Out of the 36 selections, 26 feature the great tenor as a sideman and some are from sessions not reissued in quite awhile. Henderson is instantly recognizable (his distinctive tone has not changed much since 1963) and an asset to each of these performances. Also included in the box is a very attractive 40-page booklet that is highlighted by his complete Blue Note discography. This set is particularly recommended to listeners only vaugely aware of Joe Henderson's powerful music. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
