Biography

The British indie pop band the Boyfriends features Martin Wallace (vocals), Richard Adderley (guitar), David Barnett (bass), and Paddy Pulzer (drums). The initial founding of the London group dates back to 1999 when Wallace and Adderley wrote their first two songs together. Wallace, who was awestruck by Suede's 1993 performance of "Metal Mickey" on Top of the Pops, had been asked to compose a few tracks for a local indie label. The deal never came to fruition; however, Wallace and Adderley continued working together to ultimately create the Boyfriends with Pulzer and Barnett in 2002. The following June, the Boyfriends played their first gig to a near sold-out audience that included the Jesus and Mary Chain's Jim Reid. A split release with Sheffield pop act the Long Blondes followed in 2005. Around this time, Morrissey also caught wind of the Boyfriends' growing popularity, in turn choosing the band to open for him on his European tour in 2006. The Boyfriends' self-titled debut album arrived in the U.K. in early October; its first single, "Once Upon a Time," just barely missed the U.K. Top Ten its first week out. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

The Boyfriends were an indie four-piece musical group from London, England, who consisted of Martin Wallace on vocals, Richard Adderley on guitar, David Barnett on bass and Paddy Pulzer on drums. Adderley and Pulzer had previous played together in Jack.

First coming to prominence in June 2005 after becoming the first band ever to play the newly-christened John Peel Stage at that year's Glastonbury Festival, they have been likened to The Smiths by the British press. This drew interest from Morrissey who, after going to one of their shows, was supposedly so impressed he offered them the supporting slot on his 2006 European tour on the spot.

The band split in late 2006, following a tour in support of The Divine Comedy. As of 2007 their record company, Boobytrap, has collapsed and the band's website no longer exists. Boobytrap Records boss "Baz" implied that the band had split due to poor management in an interview with Playlouder.[1]

Since the split, Adderley, Barnett and Pulzer have also been working on music together. Barnett formed a supergroup of sorts under the name The New Royal Family (featuring Adderley on bass, and present and former members of Gay Dad, Luxembourg, Scarlet's Well and Salad, amongst others), as well as joining Luxembourg. Adderley has acted as producer for both bands.
