Biography

The Broken West hail from Los Angeles, which certainly makes sense when you listen to their music -- at their best, they blend glorious pop with high-spirited rock & roll and accents of folk and country in a way that recalls some of the best L.A. music of the early '70s, as if Emitt Rhodes had teamed up with the Byrds. Featuring Ross Flourney, originally from Texas, on vocals and guitar, Connecticut-born Dan lead on guitar and backing vocals, California sons Brian Whelan on bass and backing vocals and Scott Claasen on keyboards and backing vocals, and former Floridian Rob McCorkindale on drums, The Broken West came together in mid-2004 in the Echo Park and Silverlake neighborhoods of Los Angeles.

Adopting the name the Brokedown, the band began developing a potent reputation though well-received local shows, and won the attention of critics with its debut EP, The Dutchman's Gold, released in May 2005. The good press they earned from the disc and subsequent touring attracted the attention of respected indie label Merge Records, which signed the Brokedown to a record deal. The group's debut album, I Can't Go On, I'll Go On, was recorded in bits and pieces over the course of a year, during which the Brokedown learned that a band in Chicago was already using the name (and had a lawyer who presented them with a cease-and-desist order). They responded by changing their name to the Broken West, and Merge released the album under their new moniker in early 2007. A second Merge release, Now or Heaven, appeared a year later in 2008. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

The Broken West is an American power pop band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 2004,[1] and now signed to Merge Records. The members are Ross Flournoy (guitar, vocals), Dan Iead (guitar, backing vocals), Brian Whelan (bass, backing vocals), Rob McCorkindale (drums, percussion), and Scott Claassen (keys, backing vocals). Recently, drummer Rob McCorkindale was replaced by Sean McDonald on drums. McCorkindale's first child was recently born, leading to his departure. Also, Jeff Howell(Dan Iead's high school friend from Connecticut) has joined the Broken West as their touring keyboardist, playing synth, organ and piano.

Initially named The Brokedown, they changed their name in 2006 because of legal concerns with a Chicago band with a similar name.[2] Their debut full-length release is I Can't Go On, I'll Go On, referencing a Samuel Beckett quote.

Their single "Down in the Valley" was featured in an episode of Grey's Anatomy.

They have played the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and toured the U.S. and Canada with Fountains of Wayne and with The National.

None of the band members are originally from Los Angeles. Frontman Ross Flournoy was born in Memphis, Tennessee and moved with his family to Santa Barbara, California when he was 11 years old. His musical pleasures growing up included Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, and The Beatles.[2] Dan Iead and Jeff Howell grew up in Branford, CT. Brian Whelan split time between Seattle and Northern California.

On June 12, 2008, the band announced plans to release their sophomore album "Now or Heaven" on September 9, 2008 through Merge Records.

"Now or Heaven" was leaked onto the internet on August 28, 2008
