James Johnson is one of the preeminent minimalists in the new millennium e-music community. His constant progression and steady growth enhance that reputation with each new release. The Butterfly Chamber is his best solo work yet. This disc covers it all. The soft atmospheres are full of organic textures and solemn timbres. They are not necessarily dark, but they do shift with the moods of the listener. There are new -- for Johnson -- features on this disc, too. Christopher Short, of Ma Ja Le, contributes some of the sweetest electric guitar ever to track three, "Through the Resonance Field." That track is not the highlight of the CD; there are seven tracks and seven highlights. The CD is almost an hour long and, at that, it is too short. In one of the marks of true greatness, it leaves the listener wanting more. This effort takes Johnson to his own perpendicular universe. It will appeal to fans of Robert Rich, Alio Die, Lustmord, Jeff Pearce, and Mathias Grassow. ~ Jim Brenholts, All Music Guide
