Biography

From Cambridgeshire, England, the Charlottes were one of the first shoegaze bands -- beaten to the punch only by My Bloody Valentine and quite possibly Lush -- that released a single (Are You Happy Now?) and an EP (Lovehappy) before the dawn of the style's golden years of 1990 and 1991. The Charlottes were actually shoegaze of the harder-driving variety, closer to the more aggressive side of Lush and Bleach than early Slowdive's billowy textures. After a pair of singles released in 1990, the band bowed out with 1991's Things Come Apart compilation. The band's drummer, Simon Scott, joined Slowdive after they split. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

The Charlotte is a live music venue in Leicester, England, on the edge of the City Centre, on Oxford Street, opposite De Montfort University.

Andy Wright took over The Princess Charlotte (later to be known simply as the "The Charlotte") in March 1989. He had been an employee of the business since September 1985 when it was a more traditional public house environment with bands appearing two or three nights a week in the 200 capacity back room. Over the course of two decades The Charlotte became established as a nationally recognised "circuit venue" on the live music scene, known as an essential stop-off for many bands on their tours of the UK.

On January 15, 2009, it was announced the Charlotte is facing closure, after the operating company behind the venue went into administration. On March 10, 2009 it was announced that the Charlotte would remain closed for the foreseeable future, but reopened on October 8, 2009.
