Review

The soundtrack to The Cheetah Girls, a Disney Channel movie starring Raven and based on Deborah Gregory's book series, features music that is slightly better than the usual cookie-cutter teen pop found on most of Disney's other TV soundtracks. Although songs like "Cinderella" and "Cheetah Girls" are definitely in the teen pop mold, they feature more distinctive productions and performances, which only makes sense considering that The Cheetah Girls is about a group of independent-minded young women who find themselves through singing together. The Cheetah Girls themselves -- who include Raven as well as Kiely Williams and Adrienne Bailon from 3LW and Sabrina Bryan from The Bold and the Beautiful -- have surprisingly strong voices and sound especially good on the two aforementioned songs, both of which borrow a page from the Destiny's Child songbook. "Girl Power," meanwhile sounds a bit like Britney Spears' earliest hits and doesn't showcase the Cheetah Girls' vocals as well. Neither does "Together We Can," which sounds a little bit like the grandmothers of the current teen pop generation, Spice Girls. The rest of the soundtrack features more Disney teen pop acts; of these, Char's slinky "Girlfriend" and the sugar-sweet rock of Hope 7's "Breakthrough" are the standouts. The Cheetah Girls also includes remixes of "Cinderella" and "Girl Power," along with a karaoke version of the entire soundtrack. Overall, The Cheetah Girls is a fun fluffy soundtrack, and its interactive features make it even more fun for any aspiring Cheetah Girls (or Boys). ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
