Biography

The Chills were one of New Zealand's best and most popular bands of the '80s, making a small but consistent series of chiming, hook-laden guitar pop. Both the songs and the arrangements were constructed with interweaving guitar hooks and vocal harmonies, creating a pretty, almost lush, sound that never fell into cloying sentimentality. Throughout their existence, the band's personnel changed frequently -- there were more than ten different lineups -- with the only constant member being guitarist Martin Phillipps, the band's founder.

Phillipps began playing music with the New Zealand punk band the Same in 1978. Following in the footsteps of the Clean and the Enemy, the Same played mostly covers, creating a raw fusion of British Invasion and garage rock. However, the group never recorded. Phillipps applied the same approach for the Chills, the band he formed in 1980 with his sister Rachel and Jane Dodd (bass) after the Same fell apart.

In 1982, the Chills signed with Flying Nun, the influential New Zealand independent record label, and released several singles that were never widely distributed in America and Europe. During this time, the group went through an enormous amount of members: future-Great Unwashed bassist Peter Gutteridge, the Clean's David Kilgour, keyboardist Faser Batts, bassist Terry Moore, guitarist Martin Kean, keyboardist Peter Allison, drummer Martyn Bull, and drummer Alan Haig. While these incarnations of the Chills recorded plenty of singles, they never made an album. Released on the U.K. record label Creation, the group's first album, Kaleidoscope World (1986), was a collection of their early singles; it was later released in the U.S. on Homestead.

With the lineup of Phillipps, bassist Justin Harwood, keyboardist Andrew Todd, and drummer Caroline Easther -- the group's tenth lineup -- the Chills recorded their first proper album, Brave Worlds, in 1987. Produced by Mayo Thompson, the leading figure of the cult band the Red Crayola and a former member of Pere Ubu, the band wasn't satisfied with the final result, claiming it was too loose and under-produced. The group, particularly Phillipps, was more satisfied with their second full-length album, 1990's Submarine Bells, their first record released on an American major label. Submarine Bells was recorded with yet another version of the band, with Jimmy Stephenson replacing Easther, who was suffering from tinnitus. The album was well received by critics and college radio, yet it failed to break the band into the mainstream in either America or Britain. Two years later, they released Soft Bomb, which suffered the same fate as Submarine Bells. The following year, Martin Phillipps broke up the Chills again, yet the group reconvened in 1996 to release Sunburnt. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

History

Based around the one continual member of the band, singer-songwriter Martin Phillipps, the Chills have gone through an astonishing number of line-ups since its founding in 1980. There have been some 20 different line-ups, though even Phillipps himself has trouble remembering the exact number. Members of the band over the years have included Peter Gutteridge, Alan Haig, Jane Dodd, Rachel Phillipps, Fraser Batts, Terry Moore, Martyn Bull, Peter Allison, David Kilgour, Steven Schayer, Martin Kean, Justin Harwood, Caroline Easther, Jillian Dempster, and many others. Several of these musicians went on to further success in bands ranging from The Verlaines to Luna. Phillipps' earlier band, the Same, performed alongside Dunedin punk bands Toy Love and The Enemy. The Same included Martin Phillipps, Craig Easton, Paul Baird, Jeffrey Batts, Gaynor Propsting, and others.

This seemingly constant turnover of personnel is one of several reasons for the band's lack of consistent "saleability", and is referred to by the local music scene as "the curse of the Chills". It reached its most extreme case with the recording of the album Sunburnt in England. Since two band members were refused entry into the UK, session musicians had to be recruited at the last moment (Dave Mattacks and XTC's Dave Gregory provided drum and bass work for the album).

Another reason for the Chills' inconsistent output is Martin Phillipps' health. For much of the 1990s, he was laid low with hepatitis, a side effect of his then drug addiction problems. In the past few years his health has greatly improved and his addictions are behind him; and the Chills are now back recording for the first time in many years.

Initially signed by Flying Nun Records and one of the four bands recorded for the Dunedin Double EP in 1982, the Chills' output has been sporadic, largely due to lack of funding. Early tracks and singles to catch the public attention included "Kaleidoscope World" and "Rolling Moon", but it was 1984's "Pink Frost" that first made a chart impression in their native land. "Pink Frost" was recorded as a three piece Martin Phillipps, Terry Moore and Martyn Bull in Auckland at the LAB Studio by Doug Hood, with drums being added at The Point Studio in London, England, by Andrew Edge.[1][2] This was followed by "Doledrums", and then the minor international hit "I Love My Leather Jacket", recorded at The Point Studio, by Danny Hyde.[3][2] "I Love My Leather Jacket" was dedicated to late drummer, Bull, who had bequeathed the said item of clothing to Phillipps in his will.

Bull's death (from leukaemia) led to the Chills changing their name to A Wrinkle in Time, as Phillipps was initially unwilling to continue performing under a name associated with his late friend. The name change was brief, though they did perform live under the alternative name. No recordings were released as A Wrinkle in Time.

Despite their singles successes, it was not until 1987 that the band's first album Brave Words was released. Several more albums (including a compilation of the early singles) were released during the late 80s and early 90s, before the band called it quits in 1993. During this period the band produced three albums, which included memorable songs such as "Submarine Bells" and "Rain", as well as their biggest hit, the accurately titled "Heavenly Pop Hit".

Three years later, a reformed band (under the name Martin Phillipps and The Chills) released one further album, but after that the band again split, with Phillipps recording solo work and also appearing in one of David Kilgour's band, the Heavy Eights.

The Chills reformed for a second time in 2003, and have since been working on new materials, some of which appeared on a mini-album, Stand By e.p., in 2004.
