Biography

Following the success of several gloomy post-punk revival bands, the Cinematics formed in 2003 and hail from Glasgow, Scotland, after originally meeting in Dingwall. Inspired by the likes of the Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen, the band includes guitarist Ramsay Miller, bassist Adam Goemans, drummer Ross Bonney, and vocalist/guitarist Scott Rinning. By 2005, the Cinematics were touring the U.K. with Ambulance LTD, the Editors, and Brendan Benson, also signing with TVT Records. Their first single, "Chase," was released in September 2006 and produced by Stephen Hague (Blur, New Order). A full-length, A Strange Education, came out the following year. ~ Kenyon Hopkin, All Music Guide

The Cinematics are an alternative rock band from Scotland, currently based in Glasgow. The original line-up of Scott Rinning (vocals, guitar), Adam Goemans (bass), Ramsay Miller (guitar) and Ross Bonney (drums) formed in Glasgow, but they originally met at school.

The band were signed to TVT Records in 2005 after playing at an "In the City" showcase gig in Manchester. Their debut album A Strange Education was produced by Simon Barnicott (Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Editors, Kaiser Chiefs) and Stephen Hague (New Order, Blur, Pet Shop Boys), and released on March 6, 2007. The band has, to date, enjoyed success predominately in the USA and continental Europe.

In early 2008, it was reported that TVT Records was suffering financial difficulties and was forced to file for Chapter 11/Bankruptcy. The label and its assets were purchased by New York-based digital-distribution company, The Orchard. Much of the TVT roster was dropped, but The Cinematics’ recording contract was retained. Around the same time, the band parted company with Ramsay Miller, who was replaced by Larry Reid, who had previously played with the band live on tour.

In their Myspace blogs, the band reported at various stages that they were writing and self-producing their second studio album, despite suggestions that it would be produced by Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Dr Feelgood, Richard Hell).

The Cinematics' second album, Love and Terror, was released on 6th October 2009. The album has a darker, more raw sound than that found on their debut album, although there have been examples of synthesisers being used in addition to guitars, bass and drums, and the songs appear to be more lyric-based. The band’s website confirms that they will be touring Europe extensively in 2010 and in their Myspace blogs they have stated that they expect to return to North America also. In interviews the band have also stated that they expect to write and record a third album, between touring, for release in 2010, although this has yet to be confirmed.
