Review

If you like your mid-'60s British R&B raw and savage, this is the best compilation of obscure relics from that era, bar none. None of these were hits--and, indeed, none of the groups are at all known in the U.S.--but these guitar-based ravers rock with the authority of the best early Pretty Things. Standouts include the Syndicats' "Crawdaddy Simone," with some of the wildest guitar effects ever to grace a mid-'60s record; Mark Four's "I'm Leaving," with some of the earliest guitar feedback ever recorded (by Eddie Phillips, who along with the rest of the group would soon become the Creation); and "You've Got What I Want" by the Sorrows, one of the very best British Invasion bands never to have a hit in the U.S. Unfortunately this anthology is very difficult to find now, although some of the better tracks crop up on other reissues. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
