Biography

London, England's the Early Years feature David Malkinson (vocals/guitar), Roger Mackin (guitar), and Phil Raines (drums). Equipped with an amp, an electric guitar, and an assortment of effect pedals, Malkinson needed only a random one-off solo gig as the impetus to gather together his two friends -- Mackin and Raines -- to form the Early Years in 2004. Before long, the band's demo landed in the hands of BBC Radio 1 host Steve Lamacq. Both Lamacq and XFM's John Kennedy championed the Early Years' soaring space rock stylings, which draw influence from the droning feedback of the Verve, Spiritualized, Can, and the Velvet Underground. The Early Years arrived in the U.K. in September 2006 while dates with iLIKETRAINS followed in November. Stateside fans finally got their hands on the trio's self-titled debut in January 2007; The Great Awakening EP, the Early Years' second release for Beggars Banquet, arrived that April. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Biography

The band formed in 2004 through a mutual love of the pioneering German groups that began emerging in the late 60's. Bands like Can, Neu! and Harmonia who pursued a heady mix of experimentation, noise, free-jazz, pyschedelia and electronic instrumentation in their music alongside melody and song that laid the foundations for a 'scene' that subsequently became known as Krautrock. Other shared influences are broad but all encompass elements of noise, repetition, sonics and song; now key elements in The Early Years sound.

Since signing to Beggars Banquet Records in 2006 The Early Years have released three E.P's and their self-titled debut album all to widespread critical acclaim. The band have embarked on numerous UK tours, won fans in Brian Eno and Can vocalist Damo Suzuki (who invited them to perform as his backing band for a one-off improvised show at Sonic Cathedral in Dec 2006) and 2007 has so far seen them visit Europe and the States with various performances in New York and the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. The Early Years have established themselves as a revered live act.
