Biography

What would seem to be one of the oddest examples of electronica crossover was the Fireman, an ambient project concerning producer and occasional Orb-collaborator Youth plus the dean of British rock, Sir Paul McCartney. In truth however, McCartney had been involved in London's electronic and avant/garde music scene during the mid-'60s -- he even prepared the tape loops and effects for the Beatles' famed "Tomorrow Never Knows," probably the most famous use of musique concrète in history.

The Fireman collaboration began in 1993, just at the height of the boom in downtempo house, when a mostly featureless red LP named Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest appeared on the shelves of record stores. A bout of rumor-mongering reminiscent of the 1977 Beatles-are-Klaatu scam quickly gave way to the fact that McCartney had indeed been a part of the project. The album was licensed to America (through Capitol) as well, though it received little press. Though the album smacked of a one-off, the Fireman returned in 1998 with a second album, Rushes. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

The Fireman is the moniker given to electronic music experiments created by Paul McCartney and Youth. In 1993, the duo released its first album, Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest, and followed that with Rushes in 1998. In 2000, Youth also took part in McCartney's similarly styled Liverpool Sound Collage. Their most recent album, Electric Arguments, is available on their website.[1]

In June 2008, McCartney's official Web site announced that a track called "Lifelong Passion (Sail Away)," from the album Electric Arguments would be issued as a limited-edition download to fans who donated to the charity Adopt-A-Minefield.[2] The album was released on the label One Little Indian on November 24, 2008.[3] The new album features more traditional songs, in which there are vocals (the first time on any of their albums). The majority of the album's vocals come from McCartney.

The duo borrowed the title "Electric Arguments" from the poem "Kansas City to St. Louis" by Allen Ginsberg. In Wired magazine, McCartney stated this was because "he's been looking at the beauty of word combinations rather than their meaning."[4]

We had a ball making this album, and it was a great departure because it seemed more like improv theatre. In the improv spirit, there are William Burroughs-type cut-ups in the lyrics. I came to "Sing the Changes," as well as all the other songs in the album, with absolutely no concept of what the melody or lyrics would be about. So it was like writing on the spot, which I think lent an electricity to the whole sound.

—Paul McCartney [5]

In February 2009, Sirius XM launched Fireman Radio, a limited-run channel dedicated to the music of The Fireman.
