Biography

Together since 2000, the Forms hail from Brooklyn, NY. Matt Walsh (aka Acquaman) on drums, Rob Stillwell on bass/vocals, and Alex Tween (aka Ecco Teres) on vocals/guitar deliver their own punk-inspired indie pop similar to the likes of the Dismemberment Plan, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Slint. In the last few years, the Forms have shared dates with Brandtston, Arab on Radar, the Red and the Black, and Black Eyes. In early 2002, the band hooked up with Steve Albini (Nirvana, the Breeders, Cinerama) for the recording of their debut album; local indie Threespheres released the resulting Icarus in February 2003 to high critical praise. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

History

The Forms released their debut album, Icarus, in 2003. The album was recorded with legendary producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, P. J. Harvey) at the helm[1][2] and received a rating of 8.5 on Pitchfork Media. They worked with Albini again on their latest (self-titled) album, which was released in October 2007.[3]

The Forms recorded a cover of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" for Engine Room Recordings' compilation album Guilt by Association Vol. 2, which was released in November 2008.[4]

The band has shared the stage with bands like The National, The Hold Steady, Deerhunter, Minus the Bear, Ted Leo, Ok Go, Death From Above 1979, Q and not U, Prefuse 73, My Brightest Diamond and Elefant.

Reception

At the time of the debut release, reviews were generally very positive,[5] and critics compared the band favorably to early-emo rock group Sunny Day Real Estate.[1][6] Mac Randall of The New York Observer described the band as "aggro-artsy trio fond of awkward time signatures, sly rhythmic manipulation, curlicuing vocal lines, and giving one song two separate track numbers for no obvious reason... [T]hese guys make a virtue out of attention-deficit disorder."[6] PopMatters called the band "one of the most exciting, if not one of the best, new acts in indie rock right now."[7]
