Plot

The Girlfriend Experience stars adult film actress Sasha Grey as Chelsea, a high-priced escort who offers her wealthy clientele the eponymous service. In other words, on their long, often overnight "dates," she assumes the role of a temporary romantic partner, attending highbrow cultural events, engaging in intellectual discourse, and eating at hip and expensive restaurants, all while expressing an interest in the client's life and work. She keeps a detailed journal about her clients. Chelsea's live-in boyfriend, a personal trainer (Chris Santos, who previously worked as a personal trainer in the real world), struggles with trying to earn a fair share of the upscale business he brings into his gym. Chris is conflicted when a wealthy client invites him on a weekend trip to Vegas. The couple faces further problems when Chelsea finds herself sincerely attracted to one of her clients, a married screenwriter. Over the course of the film, Chelsea is interviewed by a journalist (played by real-life journo Mark Jacobson, whose reporting on Frank Lucas inspired the film American Gangster), and visits "The Erotic Connoisseur," a sleazy blogger who reviews escort services (portrayed by film critic Glenn Kenny). Director Steven Soderbergh shot The Girlfriend Experience (under the pseudonym Peter Andrews) using the same high-definition camera he used on Che. The script is by the writing team David Levien and Brian Koppelman (Rounders), who previously worked with Soderbergh on Ocean's Thirteen. The Girlfriend Experience was shown at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. As with Soderbergh's Bubble, it was released theatrically and on pay-per-view on the same date. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Review

Steven Soderbergh is a cerebral filmmaker. He's not unemotional, it's just that the first question he asks himself about every directorial choice seems to be "how does this work" as opposed to "how does this feel?" And his main characters often start out with their emotions compartmentalized because his interest in them depends on finding the breaking point where they can no longer ignore their feelings. Chelsea, the protagonist of The Girlfriend Experience, fits this description perfectly. She's a high-priced escort whose strict set of rules for dealing with clients allows her to maintain a seemingly healthy, honest relationship with her boyfriend, Chris (Chris Santos), a personal trainer. But, when a new customer wants her to join him on a weekend excursion, she accepts, even though she knows this violates her bond with Chris.

All of this transpires during a few weeks in October 2008, when the country was embroiled in both the presidential election, and, more importantly, the sudden economic downturn. Soderbergh, along with scriptwriters Brian Koppelman and David Levien, consistently underscores that money is the chief concern for Chelsea, Chris, and everyone they come in contact with. She negotiates with a web designer to create a site that will build her notoriety, and she contends with the advances of a sleazeball extortionist (movie critic Glenn Kenny) who makes his living rating call girls on his own website; Chris tries to convince his boss that he should be a partner at the gym while accepting free trips to Vegas from one of his clients. In Soderbergh's cinematic universe, people focusing on their own economic advancement will inevitably fail in their personal relationships. He's revisited that idea time and again in characters like John in sex, lies, and videotape, as well as con man Danny Ocean in Ocean's Eleven.

The lead character in The Girlfriend Experience is no different in that regard, but it's his casting of porn star Sasha Grey as Chelsea that adds something new to the mix. It's hard to tell from her work here if Grey has the chops to maintain a career as a legitimate actress, but it's hard to deny that she gives Soderbergh exactly what he wanted for the part -- namely a flat, uncharismatic performance that keeps Chelsea a mystery to us. Other than money, we're not sure what motivates her, and that's in large part because Chelsea doesn't know, either. Her line readings are stiff, but purposefully so. Only when Chelsea's with a client -- when the character herself is giving her customers "The Girlfriend Experience" -- does the call girl seem to have something going on behind her eyes. Overall, it's an intriguing, emotionally guarded performance.

The Girlfriend Experience stands among the best of Soderbergh's many "little" films, where he recharges his artistic batteries and tries out new techniques before jumping back into the world of big budgets and superstars. For those inclined to follow him down every nook and cranny of his career, it will be a welcome reminder of how restlessly probing he can be about matters of the heart. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

The Girlfriend Experience is a 2009 experimental drama film shot in New York City. It is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars adult film actress Sasha Grey.[1][2] A rough cut was screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2009.[3] The film has also been made available on Amazon Video on Demand as a pre-theatrical rental.[4] Soderbergh mentioned Michelangelo Antonioni's Red Desert and Ingmar Bergman's Cries and Whispers as influences. The film is also notable because it was produced for 1.3 million dollars and was shot with a relatively inexpensive RedOne camera.[5]

Plot

November, 2008. Chelsea is an escort working in New York City who specializes as a high class companion who offers the girlfriend experience. Lately, her clients are spending less and are troubled by the financial crisis, which is a frequent topic of discussion when she is with them. She also meets with a journalist who questions her about her work and personal life. She goes from client to client performing her services, and also discusses plans for a boutique and other ventures that will bring in more money. She lives with her boyfriend, Chris, who is a personal trainer also struggling to make ends meet, as most of his clients will only pay for short term plans.

Chris is asked by a client to go to Las Vegas for a weekend away, which he initially turns down because he won't be able to bring Chelsea and thinks she'll dislike him going without her. Chelsea meets with a website owner, "The Erotic Connoisseur", who reviews escorts and is blacklisted after she refuses his advances. Chelsea then meets with a first time client, Tim, a writer from Los Angeles. They start to click after she opens up about her experience with the "The Erotic Connoisseur". Tim is married with children, but after one date wants to spend a weekend away with her, which is against the rules Chelsea and Chris agreed upon when they started dating. After an argument, in which they break up, Chelsea and Chris go their separate ways for the weekend to meet their respective clients. Chris and his client, along with several of his friends, fly to Vegas and party in a suite. Chelsea goes to meet Tim, who decides not to come out. She returns to New York alone.

Critical reception

The film received a 60% on the critical summation site Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus of "Steven Soderbergh's latest lo-fi production is strikingly crafted but emotionally vague."

Roger Ebert rated the film four out of four stars, saying "This film is true about human nature. It clearly sees needs and desires. It is not universal, but within its particular focus, it is unrelenting."[6]

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Kyle Smith, of the long-running New York Post awarded the movie 1 star out of 4, saying "Time for another of Steven Soderbergh's 'experimental,' i.e., half-assed, films." [7] David Edelstein of New York Magazine complained that, "Most of the dialogue is listless, and no matter how much Soderbergh snips and stitches, the movie is a corpse with twitching limbs." Luke Davies, critic for The Monthly, saw the film as "disposable and pretentious" that "is shot sombrely and austerely, in a style that might be described as 'vacuous chic'" and concluded that "as a film in which a porn star's presence is a fundamental marketing hook, it is masturbation."[8]
