Biography

Following the 1997 demise of their Austin, TX-based emo band Mineral, singer/guitarist Chris Simpson and bassist Jeremy Gomez reunited in the Gloria Record. Favoring a more acoustic, organic approach than their previous project, the duo soon recruited guitarist Brian Hubbard and drummer Matt Hammon to complete the lineup, issuing their Crank! label single "Grace, the Snow Is Here" in the fall of 1998. Following the completion of a self-titled EP, the roster expanded to a quintet with the addition of keyboardist Ben Houtman. Hammon soon left the Gloria Record and was replaced by Jeremy Tappero for a pair of U.S. tours, with Brian Malone assuming full-time drumming duties in the fall of 1999. The Lull in Traffic EP appeared the following spring; three years later, the Gloria Record switched up for an indie rock growl and issued their first effort on the Arena Rock roster, Start Here. Recording sessions for a second full-length album were ultimately put on hiatus, however, as frontman Chris Simpson took an extended leave of absence and ultimately resurfaced with another group, the indie pop outfit Zookeeper. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Sonic, hypnotic and atmospheric. A rock band in the arena-sense. The Gloria Record formed in 1997, with Chris Simpson and Jeremy Gomez, friends since high school, casually making music with Brian Hubbard and Matt Hammon, two more longtime friends. Fostered by their admiration for bands with big visions and bombastic sounds (U2, Radiohead, REM) they abandoned any expectations, aspiring simply to make music that sounded fresh to their own ears.

In 1998 The Gloria Record released their debut single ("Grace, The Snow Is Here"), followed by a self-titled EP, both on crank!.

The next year and a half saw numerous lineup changes. In August 1998, Ben Houtman joined the band on piano, organs, and synthesizers. In spite of a revolving drumseat, TGR managed to complete two US tours before settling on Brian Malone as their permanent drummer. With solid lineup now in place, The Gloria Record offer this intricate yet graceful new EP: A Lull In Traffic.

TGR continuously show a maturity in structure and musicianship. They've found their place, with a sound reminiscent of both British contemporaries (Radiohead, Travis) and American indies (Seam). Crisp guitars blend with dynamic drumbeats, as Chris' impassioned voice glides along.

The Gloria Record, a rock band from Austin, Texas, was a project of former Mineral vocalist Chris Simpson and bassist Jeremy Gomez, formed in 1997 along with Brian Hubbard (guitar), and Matt Hammon (drums).

The first release was a self-titled EP, recorded in January 1998 and released on the record label Crank!. Later that year, Ben Houtman joined the group on piano/organ. Various US tours followed, and in 1999, Brian Malone joined on drums. Another EP, A Lull In Traffic, was recorded in 1999 and released on Crank! in 2000. The one and only full-length album, Start Here was recorded over many months in 2000-2001, and was produced by Mike Mogis[1] (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley) at Mogis' Presto recording studio in Lincoln, Nebraska. Start Here was released in 2002 on the Arena Rock Recording Co. label.

The Gloria Record disbanded in the spring of 2004 while working on the follow-up to Start Here [2], with Gomez and Hubbard going on to perform with Austin's The Glass Family and Chris Simpson pursuing solo projects under the name Zookeeper.
