Biography

Motor City natives Mark Owen, Chad Stocker, Josh Malerman, and Derek Berk comprise the founding lineup of the High Strung, whose music borrows equally from melodic power-pop and psychedelic garage rock. Although formed during the summer of 2000, the group's legacy stretches back to elementary school, when the latter three members became best friends at the age of 11. Once they'd entered college, the High Strung began playing shows in the Midwest while concentrating on material for a proper album. A series of EPs and the self-released LP As Is came and went, as did the High Strung's attachment to Detroit. Heading east, the boys settled in the booming musical enclave of Williamsburg, NY, just as they were slated to cut an album for Tee Pee Records.

In 2001, the High Strung joined producer Jim Diamond (Electric Six, the Mooney Suzuki, the White Stripes) for the making of These Are Good Times, a retro-garage album that was released two years later. Owen left the band in 2004, but the High Strung continued onward as a trio, reuniting the following year with producer Diamond for their second album, Moxie Bravo. Park the Van Records reissued Moxie Bravo early in 2007 and issued a new album, Get the Guests, that spring. The High Strung then switched gears by hiring studio wiz David Newfield, who had previously produced material for Los Campesinos! and Broken Social Scene, to helm their latest release. The result, 2009's Ode to the Inverse of the Dude, found frontman Josh Malerman writing increasingly personal songs. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Notable

  • These are Good Times, Moxie Bravo, and Get the Guests were all produced in Detroit by iconic garage rock producer Jim Diamond.
  • In 2004 they left their tour bus on the steps of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame[1]. They left a plaque and a note with the bus that read (in order):

"This is a 1988 Chevy G30 used by The High Strung. Although the odometer reads 8,621 miles, it is actually 318,621 miles. The spray painting was done by various people all over the country but never by anyone in the van. The van contains countless notes, photos and song ideas inspired by those met along the way."

"Dear Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, We believe rock and roll can make man heroic, make man Superman, can make giants out of the audience and artists alike … The High Strung’s donation to you is a wild multicolored beast of a vehicle that, despite its age and demand placed upon it, carried us to 500 shows across America without asking us to cancel one. Oh, yeah, and don’t you worry about any potential towing costs, the keys are in the ignition."

the keys were taken from the ignition during the excitement.

  • In 2005 they began touring libraries throughout the state of Michigan, spurring an August 4, 2005 episode of This American Life on NPR titled "Dewey Decibel System". They are currently touring libraries throughout the country as a follow up, however they remain true to their rock roots by playing in bars and more traditional venues as well.
  • The High Strung are now on Park the Van Records, their label debut will be released in May 2007. It's called Get the Guests [2]
  • The High Strung were featured in an article [3] in Time Out New York in June 2007
