The House of the Dead 2

Games: The House of the Dead 2

Roots & Influences

This game is a sequel to the original The House of the Dead. Arcade games with guns attached have been popular for years, dating back to Exidy's spate of gun games such as Crossbow and Chiller. They reached new heights of popularity in the early 1990s because technology finally caught up with the kind of play which gamers wanted.

Review: Overall

If you stepped into an Arcade any time during late 1998, you probably saw Sega's House of the Dead. This was a game that drew in hard-core shooter fans by offering frantic gameplay where the player had to mow down hordes of the undead. Best of all, the zombies wouldn't go down without a direct shot to the head, resulting in carnage-o-riffic gore-fests where walking torsos would keep coming at you.

Naturally, a sequel was inevitable, and House of the Dead 2 manages to satisfy on the same visceral level of the first game. This time, the undead have invaded a circa-1950 European villa, and only you can save the remaining townspeople from the murderous flock of zombies. But now the zombies are tougher and more plentiful (not to mention much better-looking, thanks to improved graphic hardware). You'll still have to save innocents, including women and LITTLE KIDS. That's right, cute little six-year-olds will get EATEN in this game without your help. Egads!

The pacing of House of the Dead 2 is even more breakneck than its predecessor. In fact, it may be a little too much for most players - even though reloading is accomplished by simply aiming off the screen, the shuffling monsters are ruthless in their attacks, and you're gonna go through a lot of quarters by the time this game is over. The game's final boss redefines "cheap" - thank heavens I was playing the game with an unlimited-credit press pass, or I'd be in the poorhouse.

Aside from the improved graphics and faster gameplay, House of the Dead 2 also features the H.P. Lovecraft-esque flavor that made the first game such a hit. It also features really bad voice acting and typographical errors aplenty, as we've come to expect from the series.

All in all, House of the Dead 2 is a graphically luscious shooter that should satisfy anyone who's a fan of gothic horror and guns-a-blazin' action. Just keep a pocket full of quarters on hand.

Gameplay

The House of the Dead 2 is a rail shooter light gun game. It includes an auto-reload feature that allows players to point their guns off-screen to reload their weapons without pulling the trigger. It also incorporates a branching path system that allows players to take a variety of different routes leading to the same point in the game's story.

The game served as the springboard for the arcade, Sega Dreamcast, and PC release The Typing of the Dead, the Nintendo DS release English of the Dead, as well as the inspiration for the Game Boy Advance game, The Pinball of the Dead.

The flashbacks to the first The House of the Dead in the game's introductory sequence were recorded using the game's engine.

Story

The game follows the fictional events of February 26, 2000, almost two years after the Curien Mansion incident in The House of the Dead. The secret international agency, AMS, has launched an investigation concerning the cause of the Curien case, in order to prevent the world from experiencing a similar outbreak. Strange occurrences, however, are reported to be taking place in the city of Venice, Italy, the last known location of AMS agent G, who has gone missing. Agents James Taylor and Gary Stewart are dispatched along with Amy Crystal and Harry Harris to investigate and evacuate the populace. Upon finding G alive but wounded, James and Gary are met with an undead horde developed by Caleb Goldman, the president of the eminent EFI Corporation and an expert on the genome theory who funded the experiments of the late Dr. Curien.

While converging on Goldman's headquarters, James and Gary face many formidable foes, including Judgment consisting of an imp-like monster Zeal and his headless, axe-wielding puppet Khual; The Hierophant, an aquatic beast which heads an assault on Venice's waterways and Central Plaza; segmented serpent-like beasts stalking the sewer system known as The Tower; and Strength, a chainsaw-wielding giant which wounds Harry and chases James and Gary throughout the Roman Coliseum. Curien's masterpiece, The Magician, is resurrected by Goldman to oversee the birth of The Emperor, designed to "rule over nature and to destroy, and hate mankind". In its prototype stage, the Emperor was not as strong as Goldman would have hoped, and fell to the AMS agents. In order to evade being arrested, Goldman committed suicide by throwing himself off the roof of his building.
