As Michael makes a mad dash for the jungle determined to rescue his missing son, Jack, Locke, and Sawyer set out in hot pursuit. Jack has gained quite a reputation in the medical community as a result of his miraculous success with Sarah, prompting an elderly man with a spinal tumor to seek the surgeon out in a last ditch effort for survival. The man's daughter, Gabriella, has come along as well, and both are certain that Jack can get the job done. As the attraction between Jack and Gabriella becomes increasingly obvious, Jack's father warns him to keep his distance from the girl. Jack has been spending an inordinate amount of time at the hospital in an attempt to save the man's life, and as a result his marriage is suffering. When the surgery fails and Jack Loses his patient, Christian sites the man's age as the main factor in the man's death before sharing a brief kiss with the fragile Gabriella. After admitting that he can't become involved with her, Jack returns home to tell his wife that he wants to focus more on the marriage. Much to Jack's surprise, his wife has some distressing news of her own to share. Meanwhile, back on the island, Jack, Locke, and Sawyer venture into the jungle in search of Michael. As the daylight fades, gunshots ring out. Though Locke suggests that the team return to camp until daylight, Jack is determined to press on. He's sure that he can convince Michael to return to the camp, though Locke knows that there's no chance of that happening until Walt is safe in his father's arms. Out of the trees, a shadowy figure emerges and urges the search party to return to their camp. Their curiosity, says the man, is about to get them all killed. According to this mystery figure, the only reason the survivors haven't all been disposed of is because "They" have permitted them to live. When the mystery man demands that Jack, Locke, and Sawyer give up their guns and Jack calls his bluff, the man proves well prepared to show just how serious he is about the matter. Later, back at the camp, a defeated Jack asks Ana Lucia how long she thinks it would take to build an army. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
