Review
The Kids Are All Wrong EP begins with "Burning Hearts," a song so sickeningly overwrought, and yet so achingly beautiful, it has to be one of My Favorite's defining moments. Filled with Andrea Vaughn's pretty "la la la"s and lyrics like "all of this snow has made us glow in the dark," it tells a star-crossed teenage tale against the backdrop of Hiroshima, and sets the whole thing to lilting reverb guitar and trilling keyboards. It's this flair for suggesting cold, '80s indie pop artifice while subverting it with just a few artful modernist moves that keeps My Favorite ahead of its own revisionist game. Michael Grace handles lead vocals for the similarly echoing, unabashedly decadent "Radiation" -- "Let's do it while the night still makes us sick," he sings, and it's unclear if he's talking about the bomb's fallout or the fleeting nature of teenage infatuation. [Kids Are All Wrong is available in its entirety on Happiest Days of Our Lives, which repackages some rare My Favorite material, with additional remixes and a some new songs.] ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music GuideTracks
