The Leona Group charts the educational advancement of its students. The company contracts with school districts to operate more than 50 public charter schools serving some 15,000 students in Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, and Ohio. Most schools are in Arizona and Michigan, which is home to about 20 schools for children from pre-school through the 12th grade. The nearly 20 schools in the Phoenix and Tucson areas offer flexible schedules and a four-day school week (with individual study and special tutoring and advancement programs on Fridays). Designed to offer alternative education programs, the Leona Group was formed in 1996 by William Coats, a national leader in public education reform.
