He learnt folksongs on an Australian sheep farm (1926-35) and whaling-songs as an Antarctic whaling fisherman (1937-8); later he travelled in South America and the Middle East. As an ethnomusicologist his interests centred on south-east Europe. He lectured in the USA and Australia and made numerous folksong recordings. His studies of folk music emphasize social context and economic conditions.
