Biography

Jon Bernhardt and Kris Thompson were inspired to create the Lothars after seeing the film, Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey. The film was a documentary on the life of Leon Theremin and the self-named instrument he created that would become essential into the evolution of electronic music. Bernhardt and Thompson formed the group in 1996, composed of three theremins and an electric guitar. The Lothars sound is easily stated as electronic music at its most fetal state. Their 1988 debut record, Meet the Lothars, was mainly comprised of improvisational sets on Camera Obscura. The ensemble for the first album included Bernhardt, Thompson, Ramona Herboldsheimer, and Brendan Quinn. ~ Diana Potts, All Music Guide
