Biography

Chic, dance-friendly, and shot through with mischievous sex appeal, Bay Area indie rockers the Lovemakers earned a dedicated local following in the early 2000s thanks in no small part to their sultry image. Lisa Light and Scott Blonde met in Oakland, CA, in 2002 via Blonde's manager, whom Light was dating. Light ditched the manager for Blonde and joined his band, Applesaucer, before the year was out. The chemistry between the two was evidently too much for the band to handle, however, and the two were purportedly kicked out of Applesaucer for making out during band practice. Unabashed, the two musicians dubbed themselves the Lovemakers (taken from a Japanese porn flick called The Weird Lovemakers) and struck out on their own. Light and Blonde recruited a keyboardist, Jason Proctor, and got to work on a homemade, self-titled EP. Released in 2003, the disc became quite popular in the Oakland area, selling out at local record stores and earning the group an avid following at its live shows. Their EP began to get local radio play, studio reps started showing up at the band's gigs, and soon enough the group was snatched up by Interscope. Things were going well for the band, but rock stardom put a strain on Light and Blonde's relationship; they broke up only weeks before they were scheduled to record their debut album. Undaunted, the group headed into the studio and recorded Times of Romance, a sweaty, glittery, disco-laden affair that hit stores in late summer 2005. Chief among the album's offerings was a single called "Shake That Ass," an indie re-imagining of 50 Cent's "Shake That Ass Girl." The group recruited a drummer, Ken Hard (formerly of Oasis), and moved to a new label, Fuzz, Inc., over the course of the next two years. Their sophomore EP, Misery Loves Company, came out in 2007. ~ Margaret Reges, All Music Guide

The Lovemakers are an electropop/New Wave band from Oakland, California.[1] The band was formed in the spring of 2002 by Scott Blonde (guitar, vocals) and Lisa Light (vocals, bass) who are the two core members. Light and Blonde met in 2002 via Blonde's manager, who Light was dating at the time.[2] Shortly afterward Light left her boyfriend, and she began dating Blonde and joined his band Applesaucer.[2] They were forced out of the band, reportedly for making out during practice.[3] Afterward they formed their own band naming themselves The Lovemakers after the Japanese sexploitation film The Weird Lovemakers.[4] They joined with Jason Proctor on keyboards to form the initial lineup.[5]

The Lovemakers released a self-titled record in 2003. A second record, Times of Romance, was released on August 23, 2005 on Interscope Records new imprint Cherrytree. A single, "Prepare for the Fight", was put out in advance of the album's release date. The album also features Josh Freese on drums. In 2006, Proctor departed to return to his day job as a computer programmer full time.[3]

In 2007, The Lovemakers signed to Fuzz, a fledgling San Francisco record label, who released their third album Misery Loves Company on July 24, 2007. The album is an enhanced EP featuring 5 songs and 5 corresponding high-quality music videos. A single, "Whine & Dine", was put out in advance of the release date. For Misery Loves Company and the subsequent touring the band featured Brandon Arnovick on keyboards and Kenneth Hard on drums. At some point Arnovick and Hard departed, and Hard was replaced by Michael Urbano on drums. Urbano recorded drums on all except for one track on Let's Be Friends, but no longer plays live with the band. The band currently features Cary LaScala on drums and Gareth Lloyd on synthesizer for live performances.

In 2008, The Lovemakers began a production deal with independent music company Talking House Productions (San Francisco) and began recording its fourth album. The band released its fourth album Let's Be Friends in September 2009, followed by a supporting tour.[6] The Lovemakers released an advance single called "See What I Wanna See" on August 11, 2009, which was featured by iTunes on its "WHAT'S HOT" list and its "NEW AND NOTEWORTHY" list [7]. Their second single off Let's Be Friends, "Love is Dead", was featured as a Single of Week on iTunes during the week of September 9, 2009.
