The Lurking Horror

Game Description

You are a student at G.U.E. Tech, and you have braved a snowstorm to visit the computer lab and finish the term paper you have been working on. The snowstorm turns into a definite blizzard as you work.

But, when the time comes to finally print it out the file, something is wrong. The file seems to have been corrupted somehow, while it was inside the computer system. Something seems very, very wrong here.

What could have done such a thing? Is it a computer virus, or perhaps... something worse? Even the hacker you ask to help you can't seem to straighten it all out. It's up to you to find out where the fault lies and to deal with it. This is your job in The Lurking Horror from Infocom.

Review: Overall

Just about everyone knows what it's like to lose something important. Somehow, it seems doubly worse when it's a computer file that is terribly important and which you have put a lot of work into.

That's your situation in The Lurking Horror by Infocom. Your term paper has been hopelessly mangled by the computer system, and even your friend the hacker seems unable to help. Something seems to have invaded the computer system, and it is up to you to find it and deal with it.

You'll have to brave the tunnels under the school and explore the many different buildings which make up the G.U.E. Campus. As in just about every adventure game, collect everything you find. You'll usually need it further along in the game. And save often, under different file names. This way, if you get caught in a bad situation, you won't have to restart the game.

Most Infocom games are extremely complex, this one included, with plotlines both complex and clever, often with a streak of humor that delights even as you curse the difficult puzzles.

As usual, the text nature of the game can be difficult to adjust to by those not used to playing games from Infocom. Soon, however, it will become second nature.

The Lurking Horror is more complex than most, and the ending might be seen as a bit of a letdown by some players. However, the game is enjoyable on the whole.

Review: Enjoyment

You might feel a bit cheated by the end of the game, but the puzzles are more than adequate to challenge your mind.
