The Luxury is a Boston-based Britrock band, formed in the summer of 2005.
The Luxury's music is a mix of contemporary and classic British and American-flavored original rock that has been likened to artists ranging from Stereophonics and The Beatles to R.E.M. and Tom Petty.[1]
The band started out with a short-lived lineup brought together by local DJ David Virr (aka Dave Duncan). Over the course of 2006 the lineup of the band evolved, beginning with guitarist/vocalist Jason Dunn and drummer Stephen Foster, joined by Ultrasonic Rock Orchestra guitarist Daanen Krouth, bassist Justin Day and keyboardist Brooks Milgate (who would later leave the group to pursue his own projects, to be replaced by Steven Borek).
In spring 2007, the debut album This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things arrived. Heralded in local and national [2] press as a success, the record entered the College Music Journal top 200 at #152 upon its distribution, debuting as the 13th most added disc in the nation (independent or label-supported).[citation needed] In Boston, Dunn has been nominated for "Best Vocalist" a total of 4 times, by the Boston Phoenix, WBZ-TV, and The Noise. The Luxury benefits from having two audio engineers (Dunn and Foster) in the group. [3]
In May 2008, the band ran into a snag involving Amazon.com and the Toccoa-based Christian rock band Luxury (band) (largely inactive since the mid 90's) - it appeared that the megasite had grouped both bands' mp3s together into one online store, meaning that payments for downloads were also being grouped together. The situation is still being looked into. [4]
In July 2008, the British rock group Coldplay chose The Luxury from the top three of a pool of over 400 Boston-area bands to open their August 4th, 2008 concert at Boston's TD Banknorth Garden. The selection process was sponsored and watched over by Boston alternative rock station WFNX, and involved a whittling down to 15 contenders by the station, online fan voting, and then ultimately a selection by Coldplay themselves. [5]
On April 24, 2009, the band won the 31st Annual WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble, held at The Middle East (nightclub) in Cambridge, MA. Each year, WBCN invites 24 of the over 3,000 bands in Boston and the surrounding area to compete in this friendly competition, which annually generates publicity and awareness for the bands, while simultaneously increasing awareness of Boston's music scene with extensive press and radio coverage. [6]
On July 11th, 2009, The Luxury released their sophomore album In The Wake of What Won't Change with a CD Release Party at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA. The Click Five, Midatlantic and Aloud were the supporting acts for the evening.
The band is now looking into touring the east coast this fall in support of the new album.
