The Middle East

An undefined area centred on the eastern Mediterranean which is sometimes said to include lands as far west as Morocco and as far east as Pakistan. The eastern portion of these lands is sometimes known as South-West Asia. The term is generally accepted, however, as comprising Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the Arabian Peninsula. The area is characterized by having a predominantly Muslim population. In the past this region was sometimes known as the Near East in comparison with the Far East.
