The Mother's International School (MIS) is a public secondary school in New Delhi, India. It is an establishment of the Sri Aurobindo Education Society, an agency of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. In fact, it shares its campus with the New Delhi branch of the Ashram. The school is an English-medium co-educational institution affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

MIS Senior Building

The school provides ample scope for the all-round personality development of students. It has well-equipped laboratories in its different departments where stress is laid on understanding and appreciation of the subject rather than memorising for an exam-based system alone. It has a vast library where students can find books relating to various topics.

The institution benefits from the serene Ashram ambiance and mutual interaction with the other institutions on the same campus, which include the alternative education school, Mirambika, the pre-school Mira Nursery, and the Matri Karuna Vidyalaya. The campus also hosts a bakery, iron-work unit, wood-work unit, candle-making and handmade paper unit, vocational training centre, book store, and an organic vegetable farm. The school has now added a Pre-Primary Wing.

History

The school was founded on 23 April 1956 by Shri Surendra Nath Jauhar "Faquir", with the blessings of The Mother, Mirra Alfassa, a renowned spiritualist, the spiritual partner and collaborator of Sri Aurobindo.

The school's motto "More True, Forever More True" was given by the Mother herself and the school's emblem portrays a bird in flight rising towards heaven. When asked about the date of the school's opening, the Mother replied "23456". And as the only possible date was 23 April 1956, it was this day that the school first opened[citation needed].

When the school started out, a whole batch would have not more than 15 children, but today, a batch has 180 students, divided into 5 sections of 35-36 students each. The school has two wings, the Primary and Secondary

Enrollment

The school has a strength of about 2500 pupils with an average class size of 35 students. Each grade has five sections.

Academics

The school teaches four languages: English, Hindi, Sanskrit and French. It also teaches mathematics, science and social studies till Class 10. There are three main streams for study beyond Class 10: Science, Commerce and Humanities.

Other School Areas

Canteen, Book Shop, Matri Store(For buying eatables and drinkables)

Extracurricular activities

The school also places emphasis on co-curricular activities such as art, craft, dance, sports, vocal and instrumental music.

Culturally, the school is a hub of activities. Being a member of SPIC MACAY, the School has active drama, quizzing, yoga, taekwondo, gymnastics, music (instrumental as well as vocal) and art groups. The school is continually a host to various inter-school competitions.

The school has had a great record in the past years, with achievements ranging from academics to sports and co-curricular activities. It is one of the foremost in education in Delhi and has featured thrice in the Outlook C-Fore Best School Survey as the best school in Delhi and one of the top 10 in India [1]. It has also been a regular participant and a frequent winner at the inter-school Aryabhatta Inter-School Maths Competition and many more other such competitions such as the Sri Srinivasa Ramanuja Maths competition .

A major plus point of the school is the small student to teacher ratio (1 teacher for every 30 students)[citation needed]. Therefore, each child gets a lot of individual attention. Each year, inter-house competitions are held in the school, like the Bag Drama, Oral Interpretation, Poem Festivals, debates etc. The children also get to showcase their talents on the Talent Fiesta, held yearly on the 23rd of April.

A number of students go on to study in India's most prestigious institutes, like the BITS, IITs, AIIMS, NLS etc. The healthy competition these students encounter at the school level ensures that there is no problem in adapting to the competitive conditions in such institutes.

The school also hosts an annual football tournament, the 'Surendra Nath Jauhar Tournament', in which many of Delhi's finest schools compete. The tournament, being a knockout competition, lasts for about almost a week, and the team winning the finals is proclaimed the winner, and is awarded the trophy.
